Broadway Poll

665 votes as of Saturday, October 11, 12:38:09 PM

How do you feel about charities and foundations dedicated to nurturing theatre granting large cash awards to well established writers who already make a living through their art?

  A.  Fine. It’s their money so let them give it to whoever they want.
  B.  If they really want to support the theatre they should give the money to talented writers who need to spend time at other jobs to make a living.
  C.  Honoring established playwrights is fine, but the honoree should use the money to help talented unknowns.

D

If this poll is in-reference to the recent awarding of Tony Kushner, I'd like to add a "D" choice. I believe charities and foundations must always first let their benefactors and donors know what they're doing with the money before it's rewarded. And the recipient (renown and rich or not) should use the money more as a grant to help forward that charity or foundation with a commissioned new piece, to be produced or acted by fresh or up-and-coming faces.

D is NOT a choice

Regardless if the writer is well established, what EugLoven proposed (i.e., "use the money more as a grant to help forward that charity or foundation") has an Orwellian feel to it. Creative shackles only compromise culture. An artist's integrity is is his/her most prized possession. I suggest EugLoven pop in the Rent DVD or reread 1984.

I should have been more clear. By "forward that charity or foundation" I meant as a benefit, not as propaganda. For example, Fuerzabruta paired with a non-profit water charity (portions of ticket price went helped provide clean water to countries). Or the countless productions here in NYC, with big creators at the helm (who say, may be on the board of an organization) who put together readings or concerts where the money goes right back to the charity.

Also, just as a general rule, please try not to insult the intelligence of strangers.

I just think talent is talent and amount of money in the bank shouldn't be a discriminating factor when it comes to awards.
