YoungArts Announces Master Teachers in Miami: Bill T. Jones, Malcom Gets & More

YoungArts-Announces-Master-Teachers-in-Miami-20010101

YoungArts, the core program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts is proud to welcome several world-renowned artists to Miami January 9-14, 2012, to serve as Master Teachers for YoungArts Week. Every year YoungArts selects approximately 150 of the nation’s most talented 17-18 year old artists to travel to Miami for YoungArts Week, an all-expense paid weeklong gathering that includes master classes, workshops, readings, and exhibitions and performances that are open to the public. This year’s class of students will have the exclusive experience of participating in master classes with Robert Redford, Bill T. Jones, Jacques d’Amboise, Jon Secada, Malcolm Gets and Debi Mazar. They will also participate in a special arts advocacy session with Robert L. Lynch (Americans for the Arts).

WHEN:   Robert Redford is recognized widely as an actor, director, activist and founder of The Sundance Institute & Film Festival. He will be teaching a master class to all YoungArts Finalists on Saturday, January 14, 12:00-1:15 p.m. at the Royal Palm Ballroom, 1545 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. Redford will also be awarded the 2012 Arison Award at a special ceremony, open to the public, at An Affair of the ArtsPerformance and Gala, 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, 174 East Flagler St., Miami.

Bill T. Jones, a multi-talented artist, choreographer, dancer, theater director and writer, has received major honors ranging from a 1994 MacArthur “Genius” Award to Kennedy Center Honors in 2010. He will be giving a master class to all Finalists on Saturday, January 14, 1:30-2:30 p.m., at the Royal Palm Ballroom, 1545 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. Jones’ ventures into Broadway theater resulted in a 2010 Tony Award for Best Choreography in the critically acclaimed FELA! He also earned a 2007 Tony Award for Best Choreography in Spring Awakening as well as an Obie Award for the show’s 2006 off-Broadway run.

Jacques d’Amboise, recognized as one of the finest classical dancers of our time, will lead a master class for the YoungArts Dance Finalists on Friday, January 13, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Miami City Ballet, 2200 Liberty Ave, Miami Beach. Mr. d’Amboise was a protégé of Balanchine’s and had more works choreographed specifically for him by “The Ballet Master” than any other dancer and is most remembered for his portrayal of what critics called “the definitive Apollo.”

Jon Secada is a three-time Grammy award winning recording artist and a dynamic live performer. He will lead a master class with the Voice Finalists on Friday, January 13, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the New World Center, 500 17th Street, Miami Beach. Secada has performed with opera legend Luciano Pavarotti and recorded a duet with the late Frank Sinatra on “The Best Is Yet To Come” from Sinatra’s Duets II album.

Malcolm Gets is leading a master class with YoungArts Theater Finalists on Friday, January 13, 1:00-4:30 p.m. at the Royal Palm Ballroom, 1545 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. Originally trained as a classical pianist, he made his professional debut as Mozart in Amadeus. He has appeared extensively on stage, television, and film. He played Richard, the tortured artist on NBC’s “Caroline in the City,” and he also appeared as Gould in HBO’s recent “Grey Gardens” opposite Jessica Lange

Debbie Mazar made her feature film debut in Martin Scorsese’s Good Fellas as Ray Liotta’s junkie mistress. She went on to work with such noted directors as Oliver Stone, Spike Lee, Joel Schumacher, Barry Levinson, Jodie Foster, F. Gary Gray, Michael Mann and Woody Allen. She will lead a master class on Friday, January 13, 4:30-6:00 p.m. with YoungArts Theater Finalists at the Royal Palm Ballroom, 1545 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. Mazar currently plays “Babs” on MTV’s animated series Good Vibes, created by David Gordon Green.
