WILLIE STEWART'S RHYTHMS OF AFRICA COMES

TO THE MIRAMAR CULTURAL CENTER

HONORING BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Miramar, FL -  Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark's celebration of Black History Month climaxes on Saturday, February 27, with a free performance of "Rhythms of Africa, Music Around the World" by Willie Stewart, of the internationally acclaimed band Third World.

Electrifying and interactive, Rhythms of Africa features guest musicians and 60 local Miramar children ages 8 -13, including a seven-year-old master drummer.  Using percussion instruments and techniques, the show matches African rhythms to the Diaspora, tracing the voyage of sounds from Nigeria and the Ivory Coast to Trinidad, Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica, and New Orleans.  It's a journey of African rhythms around the world, heard in contemporary musical influences such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Santana, whose music is celebrated at the show's conclusion.

Vouchers for tickets to the free performance are available beginning January 20th at the box office, 2400 Civic Center Place, and on the website www.MiramarCulturalCenter.org.  Vouchers must be redeemed at the box office starting two hours before show time on Saturday, February 27th.  For additional information, please visit the website or call (954) 602-4500.

Also in celebration of Black History Month, the African Art Exhibit "Power Revealed" is on view at Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark's Ansin Family Art Gallery.  The landmark exhibit features 25 artifacts from the collection of the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University, depicting concepts of power from Africa's rich cultural heritage.  Works include hand-carved masks, figures, and ceremonial objects. The exhibition runs through March, 2010.  Gallery Hours: Monday, Wednesday & Friday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Tuesday & Thursday 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Miramar Cultural Center ArtsPark, in partnership with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, is a collaborative effort of many who share a fundamental commitment to the arts as essential to a strong and vibrant community.  The project is funded in part by Broward County through the Broward County Board of Commissioners with proceeds from 2000 Safe Parks & Land Preservation Bond. The Center also acknowledges the support of the State of Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
