Steven Janicki, Executive Director of the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts, is announcing the 2009-2010 Performing Arts Season. The King Center is located at the corner of Post Road and Wickham Road in Melbourne. This season highlights another exciting year of performing arts and entertainment close to home.

In our quest to provide the finest performing arts and educational theatre programs on Florida's Central East Coast, we are pleased to announce seven wonderful children's shows this season. This is an excellent opportunity for youngsters to experience the thrill of a live performance through the world of music, drama, dance and a combination of other arts and educational programs. All performances are on the Main Stage and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

We are also featuring three performances (JIGU! Thunder Drums of China, A Christmas Carol and Golden Dragon Acrobats) for a "Family Fun" evening. These performances offer a children's discounted ticket for ages 12 and under. Due to safety concerns, the capacity of the theatre is limited to the number of seats. STOMP is explosive, provocative, sophisticated, sexy, utterly unique and appeals to audiences of all ages. The international percussion sensation has garnered an armful of awards and rave reviews, and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments - matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps - to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. The return of the percussive hit also brings some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured and the addition of two new full-scale routines, utilizing props like tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans.

Presented in cooperation with Brevard County Public School District and in conjunction with the main stage live theatrical production of "Out of the Mist...A Dragon" (cost for the performance is additional).

The workshop will focus on adapting folk tales as scripts, puppet construction, techniques for building scenery in the classroom, oral interpretation of dialogue and puppet manipulation for classroom productions. Participants will leave the workshop with useful tools to immediately replicate in the classroom, further appreciation for the art of puppetry and heightened awareness of the art form.

Registration for the Professionally Developed workshop is open to all teachers of public and private schools.

We are seeking community venues to host the following programs:

Workshops for Students • Available dates: Monday-Wednesday, October 19-21, 2009

Produced by The Wood and Strings Puppet Theatre. Students will work with master puppeteers in puppet construction and examine the definition and application of puppetry to story telling as well as receiving instruction in puppet manipulation. Led by master puppeteers, the workshop integrates cultural folktales with the art of puppetry. All materials are provided. 30 students per session.

The Jungle Book
Adapted from the book by Rudyard Kipling.

With a cast of five costumed characters and produced by the national touring company Theatre IV, the fully staged production will infuse a strong sense of friendship, team work and impart a direct correlation to literature. A question and answer with members of the cast is available (subject to change based on touring schedule). Educational resource materials will be provided for the event. The performance is approximately 60 minutes.
