The Island Players Born on Marco Island

New community theatre group debuts with John Patrick's light-hearted comedy "A Bad Year for Tomatoes"

There's a new player in town: The Island Players.
The Island Players is a new community theatre group founded by a trio of longtime theatre

aficionados and Marco Islanders Pat Berry (founder of the Marco Island Film Festival and SoapFest), Jean Ann Rowles and Pattie Ziesig (founder of Pattie's Playhouse). All three women bring extensive stage and directing experience as well as strong affiliations with local community organizations.
According to Ms. Berry, The Island Players was created to provide an outlet for fun, creative community involvement while seeking to produce quality entertainment not currently served by the professional theatre groups.

"Community theatre has the best chance of reaching the average citizen and family to offer an opportunity to see live drama," explains Ms. Berry. "The Island Players has partnered with the Marco Island Historical Museum Society for weekend performances that will allow affordable pricing," she adds. The shows will be held at the Rose History Auditorium located at 180 South Heathwood Drive in Marco Island.

The Island Players' premiere production will be American playwright and screenwriter John Patrick's light-hearted comedy A Bad Year for Tomatoes. Co-directed by Berry and Ziesig, this audience favorite follows the actions of TV star Myra Marlowe who jettisons her acclaimed but unsatisfying career to move back east and write her memoir.

A Bad Year for Tomatoes will be run for eight shows Friday, Sept. 30, Saturday Oct. 1 and Sunday Oct 2, again Friday Oct. 7, Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9 and Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15. All performances begin at 7 pm.

Auditions for A Bad Year for Tomatoes will take place Wednesday, July 13 and Thursday, July 14 at Centennial Bank, located on the second floor, at 614 East Elkcam Circle on Marco Island at 6:30 p.m. No singing or dancing required, however, sides (copy dialogue chosen from the script) will be provided at the audition. A current photo and resume is requested, but not mandatory. If unable to make open audition due to prior conflicts, call (239) 394-0080 to schedule an appointment with the directors. Six acting roles are available: three senior female, one young female and two male.
"The Island Players has many exciting shows planned for the upcoming season," promises Ms. Rowles. "We are also seeking persons committed to quality entertainment who are creative and have a wide variety of skills in theatre. No experience necessary but enthusiasm is required," she adds.

The mission of The Island Players is to bring together the community to share ideas and other artistic performance ventures, under one roof and in an atmosphere of art, tolerance, creativity and fun. For more information, contact Pat Berry at (239) 394-0080.
