Surfside Players, Cocoa Beach, is proud to present a modern psychological thriller, THE PILLOWMAN, by Martin McDonagh, directed by Janet Bentley-Hallberg.
THE PILLOWMAN is the 2004 Olivier Award Winner and a 2005 Tony Award Nominee for Best New Play. With echoes of Stoppard, Kafka, and the Brothers Grimm, THE PILLOWMAN centers on Katurian, a writer of grisly short stories often showing violence against children, who has been arrested by two detectives, Ariel and Tupolski, because some of his stories resemble recent child murders. When he hears that his brother Mikal has confessed to the murders and implicated Katurian, he resigns himself to his execution but attempts to save his stories from destruction.
WARNING: THIS PLAY IS FOR MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY. It contains frequent, strong profanity and adult themes, and discusses violence against children. The play includes both narrations and reenactments of several of Katurian's stories, most notably the autobiographical "The Writer and the Writer's Brother," which tells how Katurian developed his disturbed imagination by hearing the sounds of Mikal being tortured by their parents. All the performers are at least 18 years of age. Audience members under 18 years of age require parent/guardian supervision. Not suitable for viewing by children.
Performances are for two weekends, April 29 through May 8, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. Tickets are only $10. There is no assigned seating.
THE PILLOWMAN is the final production of Surfside's SECOND STAGE Series. Although Second Stage will no longer be officially planned as part of Surfside's future seasons, members of the Surfside community will continue to produce intimate, minimal-tech, actor-focused Special Events in the weekends between our mainstage shows.
We remain committed to introducing Brevard County audiences to the best of modern, cutting-edge, nontraditional theatre, much of which raises awareness of today's social issues and covers many points of view. THE PILLOWMAN is being presented in honor of April 2011 as NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH.
