A DOUBLE BILL OF FIRSTS

USHER ARRIVAL OF A NEW THEATER COMPANY

The Pinecrest Repertory Theatre Company is presenting two one-act plays from legendary dramatists, David Mamet and Edward Albee.

The afternoons will begin with Mamet's play, The Duck Variations. Taking place on a park bench, Variations opens with two elderly men having dialogue about mallards and their habits. They speak openly about other issues including life, friendship and death. All the while, the debates begin to fly along with the birds.

The second act is Albee's The Zoo Story. Also taking place on a park bench, Zoo focuses on two men, one a straight-laced executive, the other, an ostracized eccentric. Themes of loneliness and acceptance arise, taking their journey toward a dark dénouement.

Both plays are a first for Mamet and Albee, written when both men were only in their 20s, and also mark the inauguration of The Pinecrest Repertory Theatre Company (PRTC), a collective formed by accomplished theatre maven Max Pearl along with acclaimed performing arts impresarios Darrell Calvin and Aaron Morris. With decades of stage experience behind them, they hope that this new collaboration will revitalize the South Florida theater scene and create affordable live entertainment for both new audiences and longtime theatergoers as well.

Max Pearl earned his Bachelor of Science degree in film and theatre from the University of Miami and is a pioneer graduate of the New World School of the Arts. He studied acting under some of the best including: Uta Hagen, Larry Silverberg, and Ruth Newton. His stage acting credits include: In the Shadow of the Glen (Tramp), The Zoo Story (Peter), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (McMurphy), The Foreigner (Charlie), Doonesbury: The Musical (Uncle Duke), Mother Courage (Commander), and A Midsummer Night's Dream (Robin Starveling). His film directing/ screenplay adaptation credits include The Swimmer and A Perfect Day for Bananafish for the University of Miami. In addition to writing screenplays, Pearl has also worked as production assistant for video production (Higher Authority Productions), and currently is on the promotions staff for WMXJ-Majic 102.7 FM. Pearl has also worked under such dignitaries as Emmy-award winning anchorman Jerry Levine and Academy-award winning director Steven Spielberg. His theatrical background includes associations with Art-Act Theatre Company, The Caravan Players and the Lighthouse Children's Theatre. Pearl is also a voiceover artist.

Darrell Calvin studied stage directing at Theatre Arts Club in London and at New York's Institute for Advanced Study in Theatre Arts. He studied film and television at New York University, and brings with him a commitment to excellence in theatre management and stage directing from his years of experience in the commercial industry. Calvin has been honored in working with the finest artists of the day: Zoe Caldwell, Jerry Herman, Carol Channing, John Houston and Howard Koch, plus many others. As a director, his New York City credits include: Heloise at Equity Theatre, He Ain't Done Right by Nell at the Provincetown Playhouse, Guys and Dolls, and Li'l Abner for the Isadora Strauss Theatre. Mr. Calvin moved to Miami in the 1980s to manage the historic Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. He hosted Burt Reynolds and Julie Andrews in the world premiere of A Man and a Woman for Big Brother/Big Sisters. For producer Zev Buffman, Calvin managed Julie Andrews in Concert, and Cats at the Jackie Gleason Theatre on Miami Beach. His management savvy brought The New World Symphony, Miami City Ballet, and The Miami International Film Festival to the Gusman. For the past number of years, Calvin has focused his attentions on helping to nurture small, blossoming theatrical organizations with his years of expertise.
