THE HOTTEST FLAMENCO EVENT IN THE COUNTRY RETURNS TO

SOUTH FLORIDA WHEN

THE ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER AND PERILLOMUSIC PRESENT

FLAMENCO FESTIVAL MIAMI 2009

Flamenco Festival Miami, a triumphant sellout last season,

features 3 main stage performances by Flamenco's greatest artists,

plus film screenings, dance classes, parties and more throughout February.

Following last season's sold-out celebration, FLAMENCO FESTIVAL MIAMI - "the hottest flamenco event in the country" (World Music Central) - returns by popular demand to South Florida with a month-long celebration throughout February 2009. Presented by the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and PerilloMusic, FLAMENCO FESTIVAL MIAMI will feature three headlining performances: ANTONIO GADES COMPANY in the U.S. premiere of CARMEN on February 12; Flamenco royalty ESTRELLA MORENTE on February 19; and LOS FARRUCO - the first family of flamenco dance - on February 28.

"The premiere of Flamenco Festival Miami attracted 6,000 people for 3 sold-out performances. 1,000 more enjoyed the workshops, classes and parties. This season's stellar lineup of flamenco artists and exciting ancillary events will continue to make the Festival one of the hottest tickets in town," says Scott Shiller, Executive Vice President of the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Acclaimed for presenting "a level of flamenco artistry that South Florida has never seen before" (The Miami Herald,) Flamenco Festival Miami will once again showcase the finest examples of trends in today's flamenco and celebrate Spanish culture in all its forms.

The lineup is as follows:

FEBRUARY 12

U.S. PREMIERE

ANTONIO GADES COMPANY in the 25th ANNIVERSARY PRODUCTION OF CARMEN

"Drama of the highest order...heart-stopping" -The Times (London)
Based on Carlos Saura's Oscar-winning film and performed by one of Europe's premier dance troupes, Carmen is the masterpiece which catapulted choreographer Antonio Gades and his company to international fame. Brilliantly theatrical with its colorful costumes and mirrored set, this Carmen is a passionate retelling of one of the world's most tempestuous tales of love and seduction, betrayal and revenge.

The scintillating score includes some of the most captivating melodies from Bizet's gorgeous opera, plus music from the popular zarzuela El Gato Montes.

8 p.m. - John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall - Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County

FEBRUARY 19

ESTRELLA MORENTE

"In the hands of Morente, flamenco remains a living, breathing tradition." -BBC

Winner of the Flamenco.com award for Best Show of 2008, Estrella Morente is pop culture royalty in Spain. Her parents are top flamenco stars, and she's married to one of Spain's most popular bullfighters. Her albums are big hits, and it is actually her strong, luscious voice you hear when Penelope Cruz sings in Pedro Almodovar's 'Volver.'

The singer from Granada often performs songs from outside the traditional flamenco repertory-sephardic Jewish songs, Jacques Brel hits, for example-but all of them always with that Andalusian spirit. "As everyone in Spain knows, when she sings, it can be difficult to take your eyes off her" (The New York Times.)

8 p.m. - John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall - Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County

FEBRUARY 28

LOS FARRUCO

"Raw flamenco, full of power, fire and unbridled masculinity." -Daily Telegraph
Los Farruco - the first family of flamenco dance - is a famous gypsy dynasty known for its  performances. Conceived and directed by Farruquito, grandson of the legendary patriarch El Farruco, this show features passionate dancing, athletic power, technique, and the elegance of traditional flamenco. Joined by two guitarists and three singers, the Farruco family present a show performed with footwork so fast the dancers appear to fly.

8 p.m. - John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall - Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County

Más Y Más y Más

Special events beyond the stage, including film screenings, exhibits, classes, and parties, will be announced soon.
