A talented cast, led by Broadway star STACIA FERNANDEZ, is preparing for the opening of the contemporary rock musical Next to Normal at Florida Studio Theatre. Performances begin in the Keating Theatre November 2 - January 7.
The actors remark that they've been moved by the music, the material, and the emotions of this project. Even Artistic Director Richard Hopkins refers to it as "a play with music" because of its emotional-depth.
"What's most exciting about working on Next to Normal, is getting to work with material that has so many layers: emotionally, musically, physically," said James LaRosa, who returns to FST after starring in ALTAR BOYZ. "It is really rare to encounter a musical that you have to use a technique of acting called realism, as opposed to the heightened sense of acting you find in most musicals. I think it challenges a lot of people's traditional idea of what a 'musical' is. You'll have moments to laugh and you'll have moments to cry."
Next to Normal is an emotional powerhouse of a musical about a suburban American family trying to take care of themselves and each other. It features music by by Tom Kitt, with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey. It won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards. Next to Normal was chosen as "one of the year's TEN best" by major critics around the country including the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times. "A work of muscular grace and power.
