BRASSY BROADS: THE NEXT GENERATION Opens 1/5 at the Goldstein Cabaret

Travel to the stage lights of America’s favorite divas with Brassy Broads: The Next Generation, opening on FST’s Goldstein Cabaret stage January 5. Get ready for three buxom broads to take center stage in a contemporary twist on the classic broads of the 20th century.

Brassy Broads: The Next Generation is taking the old standards and mixing them with a contemporary variation of style,” said Artistic Director Richard Hopkins. “The three stars of the show are paying tribute to the brassy broads, but bringing a touch of today’s influence.”

This sassy and brassy revue is a tribute to the divas of the American stage and screen. In the intimate setting of the Goldstein Cabaret, the Brassy Broads will become the dames old and new: Sophie Tucker, Mae West, Bernadette Peters, and Bette Midler, and perform iconic numbers like “The Rose,” “In The Mood,” “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend,” and more!

“A broad, to me, is the perfect balance between the lady and the tramp,” said Dennis Courtney, director/choreographer for the show. “She celebrates the richness of the lyric, and has the experience to back it up. She can make you laugh hysterically, and then bring you to tears in an instant.”

Brassy Broads: The Next Generation was developed by Artistic Director Richard Hopkins, resident pianist Jim Prosser, and the book and bridge material was written by local Sarasota playwright, Larry Parr. FST’s very own Brassy Broads will include returning actresses, Sadrina Renee and Natalie Renee. Newcomer Carly Sakalove will round out the cast. Sadrina was last seen in this summer’s hit, Beehive: The 60s Musical, while Natalie was seen in last season’s Cabaret revue, Reflections. Carly appeared in Off-Broadway’s Girls Night: The Musical, and is a graduate of Boston Conservatory, a presitgious training school for musical talent. Dennis Courtney returns to FST to direct and choreograph the production. The production also features FST favorite John Franceschina as Music Director. Costume & Scenic Design by Sara Hinkley, Lighting Design by Robert Perry, and Sound Engineering by John Valines will complete the production staff for Brassy Broads.

Brassy Broads: The Next Generation opens on January 5, 2011, and plays through March 26 at the Goldstein Cabaret. Tickets are $24 - $29 and may be purchased from the FST Box Office in person, by phone (941) 366–9000 or online at www.floridastudiotheatre.org.
