Stage and Film Actress Angelica Torn Stars in New Theatre's World
Premiere of The Radiant by Tony-nominated playwright Shirley Lauro

New Theatre's (THE NEW) 25th Anniversary continues with acclaimed stage and film actress Angelica Torn starring as Marie Curie in the World Premiere of The Radiant by Tony-nominated playwright Shirley Lauro, running March 25 - April 17, 2011. The Radiant tells the story of the tempestuous, dramatic life of Marie Curie, one of the world's first recognized woman scientists, whose discovery and isolation of radium earned her two Nobel Prizes and revolutionized science forever, as she ushered in "The Atomic Age" and the first cure for cancer. 2011 marks the 100th Anniversary of Marie Curie's second Nobel Prize win and befittingly, Poland and France have named 2011 "Marie Curie Year" and The United Nations designated it "The International Year of Chemistry."

Angelica Torn is a recipient of a Helen Hayes Award for Best Actress nomination for her role in the first national tour of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning August: Osage County. Her theater credits include: Edge (Outer Critics Nomination, New Times Award), Tony Award winning Sideman (Helen Hayes Award, FANY Award), The Bay at Nice (American Premier), The Vagina Monologues, Albee's Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? (Carbonell Nomination), and the Tony Award winning revival of Anna Christie. Ms. Torn has also appeared in many films including The Golden Boys, Nobody's Fool, The Sixth Sense, The Contender, Domestic Disturbance, Nothing But The Truth, and Michael Imperioli's directorial debut, The Hungry Ghosts. Ms. Torn is native New Yorker and currently serves on the board of directors at The Actors' Studio where she is a lifetime member.

New Theatre audiences may remember Shirley Lauro from her New Theatre debut with the World Premiere of her play, Clarence Darrow's Last Trial which was Carbonell nominated and the recipient of NEA's "Access to Excellence" grant. Major Fellowships: The Guggenheim, 3 NEAs, NY Foundation for the Arts. Major Affiliations: a director of The Dramatists Guild Fund; Playwrights/Directors Unit, The Actors Studio; League of Professional Theatre Women/NY; Ensemble Studio Theatre; PEN; Writer's Guild East; Author's Guild. Ms. Lauro will be in attendance on the opening weekend of the production and take part of the Sunday post-play discussion with the audience after the Sunday matinee performance on March 27. The Radiant was commissioned by The Sloan Science Foundation and also received their "Production Enhancement Grant" and grants from TCG's Langden Foundation and The Dramatists Guild.

The Radiant is directed by THE NEW's Artistic Director, Ricky J. Martinez with an ensemble cast lead by Angelica Torn, THE NEW veteran Stephen S. Neal and making their New Theatre debut, Hana Kalinski and RJ Seikaly. Returning to THE NEW are Production Stage Manager Vanessa L. Thompson; Set Designer: Rob Eastman-Mullins; Lighting Designer: Travis Neff; Costume Designer K. Blair Brown; Sound Designer Ozzie Quintana and THE NEW's Literary Manager, Steven A. Chambers will serve as the production team's Dramaturg.
