Announces the Winners of 2008 Moretti Award

Architectural Designer Margi Nothard and Florida Youth Orchestra to Receive

Recognition at Annual ArtServe Encore Award Ceremony on Friday May 16, 2008 

The Cultural Foundation of Broward County recently named architectural designer Margi Nothard and the Florida Youth Orchestra as co-winners of the coveted 2008 Moretti Award for Artistic Achievement. They will be honored at the 19th annual ArtServe Encore Award Luncheon to be held on Friday, May 16th, 2008 at Pier 66. 

Named within the "Top Designer Under 40 in South Florida" category of the prestigious Arango Foundation 2001 Award, Margi Nothard's work has been recognized by the well-known Curator for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Paola Antonelli: "Margi Glavovic-Nothard has impressed me with the maturity and completeness of her assertive designs. Her structures pose as functions, symbols and incarnate the renewed role of architecture as a point of reference for the community."         

A master's graduate from Southern California Institute of Architecture, Nothard is the president, founding partner and design principal of Glavovic Studios Inc., in Fort Lauderdale. She is the recipient of the A1A State Award of Excellence in 2004 and 2006, and a Fort Lauderdale Community Appearance Award, for the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Bridge-Stair in 2006, and spent 16 years designing and teaching architecture and urban design in the United States, working in Frank Gehry's office in Los Angeles. She also worked and taught in New York, and produced the books, Time Defines Place, The Thin Moments and Fat Moments in Los Angeles. 

Her most recent projects include Young at Art and Broward County Children's Museum and Reading Room, the architectural and site design for the ArtsPark at Young Circle, a $26 million cultural project for the City of Hollywood, for which she is being honored with this year's Moretti award; and a Historic Restoration Project and Cultural Skate Plaza Project for the City of Miami Beach. Her work has been published in local and international magazines including, Abitare, Milan, Italy, OFARCH, Italy, Form Pioneering Design, Los Angeles, Urban Land Magazine and HOME magazine, Fort Lauderdale.           

Since 1988, the Florida Youth Orchestra has been providing the highest quality classical music education for young talented musicians, ages 6 – 19. More than 300 members strong, this group continues to be recognized as Florida's premier youth orchestra. Under the direction and guidance of its Music Director Thomas Sleeper, the orchestras and ensembles perform for thousands of concert-goers each year in addition to regular appearances on local and national television and radio broadcasts.     

Recently returned from performing at Carnegie Hall, the Florida Youth Orchestra has continued to attract the ongoing interest, support and participation from community leaders, especially those in the arts, education and business communities. Countless alumni of the Florida Youth Orchestra have been accepted into the nation's most prestigious colleges and conservatories, consistently receiving the most coveted awards, honors and scholarships. In addition to preparing many members for careers in music, an important goal of the Florida Youth Orchestra is to develop appreciative audiences for the future.

Moretti Award    

Created in the early 1980s, the coveted, gold-plated, bronze award was designed by abstract sculptor Henry E. Moretti. Born and raised in France, Moretti studied architecture and city planning at the University of Paris. After working in New York City as a design consultant for ten years, he made Fort Lauderdale his home. In the late 1960s Moretti delved into the world of art and received numerous awards, and exhibited throughout the state of Florida in both one man and group exhibitions. His work is also part of many public and private collections.

Past recipients include Ernestine Ray, curator of the Old Dillard Museum in Fort Lauderdale and the President and Founder of Ancestral Legacies, Inc., concert impresario Judy Drucker, and Dalva Duarte, Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Also, arts organization winners have included the Florida Singing Sons Boychoir, Museum of Art Ð Fort Lauderdale and the Miami City Ballet.
